    Overview
Research efforts of the Division have changed the practice and redefined the treatment options for patients with esophageal cancer and benign esophageal disorders. The Division has published large series on photodynamic therapy for esophageal and lung cancer, minimally invasive esophagectomy, minimally invasive surgery for lung cancer, laparoscopic management of giant paraesophageal hernias, and applications of molecular diagnostics to staging esophageal cancer. Research efforts are currently supported by industry funded projects and NIH grant funded projects including NIH R01 "Use of Quantitative RT-PCR for Staging Esophageal Cancer." The Division is also actively involved in clinical and basic science projects of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) and Lung Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE). The SPORE is a five-year, multi-million federal grant to study lung cancer.

Faculty members are pursuing new knowledge in the following basic science and clinical areas:

     Basic Science
    • Quantitative RT-PCR to detect micrometastases in esophageal and lung cancer
